In a relativistic age, it is good to be reminded of the virtues and moral standards that have been a foundation for whatever is good in Western culture. Yes, one could object that the good characters are idealised and one-dimensional compared to the flawed, imperfect individuals of the real world, but at least we could aspire to be like the ideals.
At another level, Wilhelm Tell gives food for thought about political structure, freedom and self-government.
